About Wink High

Wink High is an independent online publication. Every day we publish short, sourced stories about what was happening to money, prices, inventions and business exactly one hundred years ago.

Why 100 years?

A century is long enough to see how a story really ended, and short enough that the people involved feel familiar. When you learn that an ounce of gold cost $20.67 in 1926, or that a factory worker just won a two-day weekend, today's headlines start to look different.

How we work

We read newspapers, government records, patent files and company publications from the period. Every story lists its sources. Prices are converted into today's dollars with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index. When popular legends conflict with the record, we say so.

Images

We use photographs and newspaper pages that are in the public domain, mostly from the Library of Congress and other public archives, and credit them on each story.
